UAFS sophomore Kenny Martin enjoyed his best two games as a Lion during this past weekend’s road wins against Oklahoma Panhandle State and Newman, and his efforts didn’t go unnoticed.

The 6-foot-10 forward was voted Heartland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week by the league’s sports information directors after averaging 21 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.

He is the first Lion to earn the honor this season.

Martin, who is a transfer from NCAA Division I Arizona State, scored 15 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from the line against OPSU. He also collected 10 rebounds and blocked three shots in the 84-68 win.

The Tucson, Ariz., native followed that solid performance with his best game of the season against Newman. Martin scored a career-high 27 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line. He grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and blocked four shots.

He shot 53 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line during the two-game stretch.

With the wins, UAFS (11-3, 4-2) vaulted into a tie for second place with St. Mary’s (11-3, 4-2), University of Texas of the Permian Basin (9-4, 3-2) and St. Edward’s (7-6, 3-2). The Lions will resume conference play at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Rogers State in Claremore, Okla.
