Four players each tallied double-digit kills as the UAFS volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to beat the Newman University Lady Jets in a five-set thriller on Saturday at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS won the Heartland Conference match 25-11, 25-27, 22-25, 25-15, 15-11 to remain undefeated in league play. It was the second win in a row for UAFS (4-2, 2-0), which now leads the all-time series with Newman 7-1.

The comeback allowed the Lady Lions to extend their conference match winning streak to 21 matches. The Lady Lions’ last conference loss was a 3-2 setback against Texas A&M International at Laredo, Texas, on Oct. 20, 2011.

Senior middle hitter Jordan Erz led UAFS with 15 kills, one dig, one solo block and two block assists. Junior outside hitter Michelle Walker, who was this week’s Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week, had 12 kills, eight digs and one block assist. Senior outside hitter Cori Bruce had 10 kills and two digs, and freshman middle hitter Payton Hamilton had 10 kills, four digs and three block assists.

UAFS compiled a 0.228 hitting percentage.

Senior setter Stephanie Brock led UAFS with 27 assists, while freshman libero Emily Tripp led five players with double-digit digs with 34.

The Lady Lions held Newman to a 0.075 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Jeana Farruggia was the only Lady Jet with double-digit kills with 15. Sophomore setter Alexus Litts had a team-high 27 assists, and senior libero Tori Alderson had a team-high 23 digs.

UAFS will return to action on Friday when it hosts the two-day Mary Beth Sudduth Invitational at the Stubblefield Center.
