Greenwood senior Ethan Clark had Southside guessing wrong last Tuesday.

Clark struck out 10 and allowed just two hits as the Bulldogs snapped a two-game 7A/6A-Central losing streak by edging Southside, 2-1.

Clark (2-1) didn’t allow a hit until Southside’s Tanner Wiley singled to left to start the Rebels’ fifth.

"I got my curveball in there for a first-pitch strike a couple of times early and that really helped," Clark said. "Coming back with a fast ball and using different speeds really helped. I thought Ethan (Adams) called really good game and they didn’t know where the ball was going."

Greenwood (8-5, 2-2) overcame two errors, 10 baserunners and four stolen bases while handing the Rebels (8-3, 2-1) their first 7A/6A-Central loss of the season.

"We saw a ton of curveballs from (Clark)," Southside coach Craig Jones said. "The thing is, we helped him a little bit and then he took advantage of it. He really wasn’t throwing a lot of them for strikes, but we would swing at them."

The Rebels were playing their first game in almost two weeks. The team’s spring break tournament in Jonesboro was rained out.

"When you’ve had that long of a break, guys are going to be a little anxious," Jones said. "(But) when you hold a team to two runs and two hits, you’ve got to win those ballgames."

Clark also provided the key hit of the game. With two outs in the third, Wiley walked Hayden Harvey and Clark followed with a soft liner that took a bad hop on right fielder Aaron Henry for an RBI triple.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Chris Sunde’s sacrifice fly to center, scoring Aaron Pittman who had started the inning with a walk.

The Rebels scored their lone run in the fourth as part of a double steal. Brennan Dooly started the inning with a walk. After stealing second and moving to third on a balk, he raced home when Jay Glidwell took off for second. Clark stepped off the mound and looked at Glidwell, momentarily freezing him, before Glidwell slid into second ahead of Harvey’s tag.
