Recently Sebastian county 4-Hers had the opportunity to showcase some of their many talents at the annual Broiler Barbecue contest held at the Sebastian County Courthouse in Greenwood. The 4-Hers started the day at 9 a.m. when they fired up their grills for the barbecue contest and the privilege of representing Sebastian County at the district contest in Fayetteville. The contestants were judged on many criteria including safety, taste, appearance, and doneness of the chicken. This was not an easy feat since they were cooking whole chicken halves weighing in at about 2.5 pounds each. After a couple of hours of barbecuing and judging and with only a few points separating the top 5 spots the winners were announced with the top five earning the right to compete on the district level in Fayetteville.
The top five places from 1st to 5th are Kyle Russell of the Dayton 4-H Club, Matt Beshears and William Howard of the Shooting Sports 4-H club, and A.J. Russell of the Dayton 4-H club, and Emily Geels of the Carnall 4-H Club. For more information on the Sebastian County 4-H program please call the Sebastian County Extension office 479-996-4131.
