Lexi Castillo is the 2018 recipient of the Alice and Marion Mathews Memorial Scholarship, a $500 scholarship which has been established with the Greenwood Education Foundation. Lexi is the daughter of Marsha and Steve Castillow and will be attending the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, majoring in education. While attending GHS, she was a member of the State Champion Lady Bulldog Volleyball Team, the softball team, Student Council Representative, FBLA (Co-Vice President) Beta Club (Public Relations Officer), National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and DECA. She also plays JO volleyball for Fort Smith Juniors and helps coach the 7th grade volleyball team. She is an active member of the United Methodist Church youth department.

The Mathews Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the “normal, ordinary working couple” of the community of Jenny Lind who ran the Mathews Service Station and Grocery Store on Highway 71 from the 1930s through the 1970s. Known as “Alice and Marion” they quietly helped those in need and trusted their God for help and assistance. The financial help from the Mathews proved to be a life-saver for several youngsters from Jenny Lind who were struggling with college expenses. Several careers would not have been possible had they not stepped in to provide financial help. The individual establishing the scholarship hopes that the recipients of the scholarship will “pay it forward” after they graduate by helping and serving others in their career choice. The scholarship was recently presented to Lexi by Stanhope Wilkinson, Greenwood Education Foundation board member.
