More of John Morgan Little’s Children

It has been a few weeks since I worked on the Little Family, so let’s refresh our memories. We are still working on the John Gray Little Family. He had a huge family and we haven’t even made it half way through his children yet. Remember that John Gray was the one that lived close to the Tatum’s and he lived nearby to Greenwood, Ark.

John Morgan is about the fifth child of John Gray and John Morgan had 10 children. We just finished John Floyd Little’s children a few weeks ago. John Floyd was the fourth child of John Morgan. So today we will start with the 5th child of John Morgan Little - Minnie Maude Little. It would be nice if we could get all the way to the last child.

Minnie Maude Little (such a cute name) was born March 1, 1891 here in Arkansas. She grew up in the Big Creek, Sebastian County area of Arkansas. She married Dolphus C. Lockridge June 2, 1907, at the age of 16, here in Sebastian County. Dolphus was 19 at the time and he was born in Texas. His family later moved to Big Creek, Sebastian County, AR where the two met.

In the 1910 US Federal Census, Maude was 19 and she was living with her husband in Big Creek, Sebastian County, AR. At this time they had a two year old child named Leta Lockridge.

Father and Husband Dolphus died early in life, Nov. 19, 1916 . He was buried in Lavaca City Cemetery. He was only 28 years old.

I found a copy of the 1920 US Federal Census for Maud and she was 27 at the time and living in Fort Smith, AR. It gives her marital status as widow. She is renting and is living with her 11 year old daughter Leta.

In a 1930 US Federal Census I find Maud Lockridge living in Enid, Garfield County, OK. She is renting a room from a Thomas and Thelma Carter, both age 22. Maud is 39 at the time. Another 10 years and I find her in a 1940 US Federal Census, living in Los Angeles, California. It says her occupation is Hotel Manager and she is living at East 9th St., house number 314 ½. She is living with several other people, probably other hotel workers. Maud died in California March 7, 1973.

I researched her daughter Leta and found out she married first a Jim W. Travis and later he went by Baxter Earl or she married his brother. I could only find a marriage certificate for Jim and Leta, dated March 7, 1927. But in the 1930 US Federal Census she is living with a Baxter Earl Taylor, age 24 in Griffin, Pope County, AR.

The 1940 US Federal Census shows them living in Big Prairie, New Madrid County, Missouri. Leola is 31, Baxter 35, and now we have some children listed. Gurtrude is 9, Billy is 5 and Lucille is almost a year.

Leta (Leola) died Aug. 30, 1954 in Los Angeles, California. Baxter Earl Taylor died Aug. 19, 1962 in Alameda, California.

Their first child was Gurtrude Taylor. I couldn’t find out much about her. She was born sometime in 1931 and I found her name in the 1940 US Federal Census record. Next child was Billy Taylor, born in 1935 and also found in 1940 US census. Lucille was the last child born to them. She came along on Feb. 28, 1937 in Missouri. I found a Public Records Index for her dated 1992 showing her living in Springfield, MO and age 55. That is all I could find on the children.

The sixth child of John Morgan Little was Totsye R. Little. She was born April 23, 1892 in Arkansas. Some time around 1912 she married John Talmadge Rogers. After they married they lived in Mississippi. I found a 1920 US Federal Census that gave their address as Laurel, Ward 2, Jones County, Mississippi. She was living with her husband and a child by the name of Noble J. Rogers, age 7. I don’t know at this point if the child is a girl or a boy.
