The first child born to John Floyd and Jessie was John Lawrence Little. He was born Oct. 30, 1912 in Lavaca, Sebastian County, AR. His 1920 census shows him living with his parents at Big Creek, Sebastian County, AR. By 1930, the census shows his family has moved to Prairie Grove, Washington County, AR. John Lawrence was 18 at this time.
I read and examined the 1940 US Federal Census and learned that John L. is now 27, only finished the 2nd year of high school and is still living at home with his parents. I think the census was usually taken in April or May of the year. The 1940 census says he is single. But other records say he was married.
John Lawrence Little was 27 when he married Kathryn Maxey. She was 18 and from Fayetteville, Washington County, AR. I didn’t find any evidence of children for this couple.
A few years later, John married again. This time to Nena Jean Towns. The ceremony took place on July 28, 1942. Nena was born Aug. 7, 1924 in Bossier City, LA. Sometime the next year they had a son named John Charles Little. He was living in Shreveport, LA in 1959 when he was 16. I think I found a notation for his US yearbook. It says John Little, born around 1943, age 16, attending C.E. Byrd High School in 1959 at Shreveport, LA. I could not find out anything more about him.
John Lawrence Little died Dec. 14, 1968 in Springdale, Washington County, AR. John’s second wife Nena died July 10, 2003 somewhere in LA. She was 78 years old at the time.
Child number two was Mary Jane Little, born Oct. 18, 1913 in Lavaca, Sebastian Co., AR. She married Glenn L. Chamberlain Aug. 4, 1934, in Washington County, AR. Glenn’s parents were Roy Chamberlin and Jessie Sheppard. Glen was born in Iowa, raised in Appanoose, Iowa. He died at the young age of 29 in 1944.
The 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Glen shows him living with his father and mother, also children Earnest 11, Emma 9, Roy L. 6 , and Guy only 3 years old. The 1930 US Federal Census does not show Jessie, the wife of John Floyd Little. It includes Roy at age 16, Glenn L. age 14, Guy age 13, and Wilbur age 5.
An obituary for Glen Chamberlain appeared in the Lovillia Press, Mar. 16, 1944. The obituary tells us that Glen had funeral service at the Lovilla United Brethren Church in Ottumwa. Burial was made in Osburn cemetery. Glen was killed in the morning of Mar 16, 1944 in a truck/train collision near Cedar Rapids.
3rd child was of John Floyd Little was Howell V. Little Sr. he lived in the same places as his brother and sister that we discussed previously. The only change was after 1938. Howell married Ava Katherine Atkinson on Dec. 21, 1838. They were married in Washington County. Ava Katherine was living in Rogers, Benton County, AR prior to her marriage.
In the 1920 census I found Ava K. living with her parents, Lorin E. Atkinson and Gertie M. with other children Dorotha age 8, Robert A. age 4 and Ava only a baby.
The 1940 US Federal Census shows Ava now age 20 and married. It gives her occupation as housewife. Also living at the same residence is Ava’s parents L.E. Atkinson and Gertie, son Guy and Glen both age 14, Joy age 12, Ava age 20, Howell is 24 and Ava Tressa Little as a baby. Howell and Ava are the parents of Ava Tressa Little.
Ava K. Little’s Social Security Index showed Jan. 22, 2000 as her death date. It also verifies she was born June 29, 1919
I found several service records for Howell V. Little Sr. The US World War II Army Enlistment Record shows Howell was born in 1915 born in Oklahoma and living in Arkansas. Enlistment date is April 7, 1945. Enlistment city was Camp Josepth T. Robinson Little Rock.
Telephone Directory for Howell V. Little and Ava show them living at 2604 Trudi Place, Springdale, AR. This address was good for the years 1993 thru 1997. A "Find a Grave" document says Howell was born Oct. 8, 1915 and then says he died Jan. 28, 1997. He was buried in the Silent Grove Cemetery located in Benton County, AR. His Social Security Death Index gives us the same information but also gives his social security. But I seldom print this information in my articles in the paper. Even though they are deceased, I consider a social security number as private for family only.
Howell and Ava had a daughter together. She was born Oct. 4, 1939 in Arkansas. She didn’t marry until May 16, 1987 at the age of 47. She married John Kinsley where they lived in Smith, Texas. A "Find a Grave" document shows John C. born in 1940 in Ware, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He died April 29, 2011 in Franklin, Norfolk County, Mass. Burial is in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
