The Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association named Greenwood Quiz Bowl Coach Rick Clow the 2015 Arkansas Junior High Quiz Bowl Coach of the Year during the live broadcast of the high school quiz bowl finals on the Arkansas Educational Television Network on Saturday, April 26. Clow was nominated for the honor by members of his junior high team. The Greenwood Jr. High team he coaches won the 6A West Regional Championship for the second year in row, and the Western Arkansas Educational Cooperative’s Junior High Tournament championship this year. The team finished second at the 6A Junior Finals Tournament for the second year in a row, and also took second at the AGQBA Invitational, and fourth for the second year in a row at the Southside High School Jr. High Invitational. The team is also the reigning champions of the Arkansas Quiz Bowl Jr. High Tournament of Champions.

This is Clow’s twenty-sixth year of coaching. He has coached junior high teams for 15 years. During those years, thirteen of his teams advanced to the junior finals tournament after finishing fourth or better at the regional tournament. He has coached teams from two different schools, Magazine in 2004 and Greenwood in 2011, to Jr. High Finals Championships, which are basically junior high state co-championships.

In addition to the team’s performance, the awards committee also considered each nominee’s other contributions to quiz bowl. This year Clow served as tournament director as the Greenwood teams sponsored the Greenwood Jr. High Invitational Quiz Bowl Tournament. Registration fees collected from teams competing at that tournament will be used to pay registration fees for the national quiz bowl tournament in New Orleans which the Greenwood Jr. High and Sr. High teams will attend for the first time Memorial Day weekend. Clow also served as the tournament coordinator for the Arkansas All-star Quiz Bowl Tournament for the past ten years and as the coordinator of the Quiz Bowl competition at the Arkansas Beta Club Convention for the past 13 years. He is a two-time past president of Quiz Bowl Association Board of Directors, and has served as a Western Arkansas representative to the board since the founding of the association in 1996.

Clow is a 1985 graduate of Greenwood High School and was the captain of Greenwood’s first quiz bowl team his senior year. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism Education and completed certification in Gifted and Talented Education at Arkansas Tech University. Rick Clow began his teaching career in 1989 in the Magazine Public Schools. In 2004 he began teaching gifted classes and English at Greenwood School District before becoming Coordinator of Gifted & Talented Education in 2006. He currently teaches gifted classes at East Pointe Elementary.?
