Sept. 3 and 4 are the dates for the first blood drive of the year at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, and Stephanie London would like to see another record-breaking year.

"Last year, we broke records with more than 1,000 people registering to donate blood, and more than 800 were able to donate," said London of Fort Smith, who is the student activities event coordinator.

The drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. The blood drive is open to the public.

"It’s really easy as school begins to become busy and not take time to think about giving blood," London said, "but blood is needed year round. We really hope our students and staff, as well as the community, make an effort to start the year by seeing this as a priority."

Donors will receive a free T-shirt and health screening as part of the process.

UAFS conducts four blood drives annually between September and April, with two each semester.

Appointments for the blood drive may be made starting Aug. 19 by signing up at a table in the Campus Center hallway, emailing or calling 479-788-7697. Walk-ins are also welcome.
