Greenwood played some inspired softball after their head coach Ronnie Sockey was ejected from the game at Southside on Monday.

But it wasn’t enough as the Lady Rebels won, 7-4.

Sockey was thrown out for arguing a call in the second inning as Southside was building a 5-0 lead.

Southside (17-4, 7-0) won for the third time this year over Greenwood (9-11, 2-5), an emerging rival in the 7A/6A central.

Paige Mendoza reached base four times in the leadoff and scored three runs for Southside. Andee Tiffee, Ciara Sweeney, Lindsey Eveld and Darrian Hensley all had two hits for the Lady Rebels.

Mendoza reached on an error by the pitcher in the second inning and motored around to third base on the play and Sockey called for an appeal that she did not touch first base. When home plate umpire Rod Miller denied the appeal and ruled Mendoza safe, Sockey said, "You are blind as a bat." Miller later said "That’s enough" and Sockey continued to complain and was ejected.

"What did I do to deserve to be ejected?" Sockey said. "(Miller) used to umpire with my dad and he doesn’t like me or my dad and he is mad because we won’t hire him to umpire games at Greenwood. It is personal."

There was a delay of a few minutes as Sockey then charged Miller after his ejection, bumped him and refused to leave the field until a Southside administrator escorted him from the field. Miller said after the game he would file a complaint report with the Arkansas Activities Association.

Greenwood came back with two runs and made a game of it after that.

"We started off well, but I think we let the drama affect us," Southside coach Cassy Story said. "After that we made a lot of errors and mistakes and we were lucky to get a win."

Sydney Henson had two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored for Greenwood and Abby Lejong had a triple and a run scored. Brooke Kiene had a double and a run scored. Jade Pate also had two hits for Greenwood.
