It’s been awhile since I shared knowledge of my collection of what I hope are useful facts, figures, fun and folklore, but first of all, let me wish you a Happy New Year!

Did you carry out the tradition of having blackeyed peas? For those of you who have never made HOPPIN’ JOHN, here’s the recipe for next year; with added knowledge I’d like to pass on to you…Legend has it LIMPIN’ SUSAN was his wife.

1 Cup uncooked long-grain white rice

8 Oz. fresh or frozen okra, thawed and sliced

2 Green onion, chopped

Hot sauce

1. Cook bacon in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat 3 minutes or until fat renders. Drain bacon on paper towels; reserve 11 tsp. bacon drippings in pan. Return bacon to pan. Add onion, and cook 4 minutes. Add peas, broth, dried pepper, and 2 cups water; season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to a boil over high heat. reduce heat to low; simmer, uncovered, 20 minutes or until peas are just tender.

I keep pen and paper handy and when I hear something of interest on TV or an article catches my eye in a book or a magazine…I write it down because no one needs to explain to me the meaning of “short-term memory.”

I read a short article the other day, “Route 66”. I learned it was song writer Bobby Troup who put words to the song. Everybody wanted to get their kicks…on Route 66.
