Eric is 15 and he is following in his father’s footsteps. Namely he has just failed his driving test. I tried in vain to cheer him up by telling him that I also failed my driving portion the first time not to mention failing my written test once. I taught myself how to drive on the roads in Deerwoods, which only had a few houses in it at the time. My parents were terrified of my driving so I took it upon myself to figure it out alone. I took my teal green 61 Chevy truck to the empty roads of Deerwoods from the top of Been Ridge and ground the gears and burned up the clutch for hours until I got it down.

My truck had an on the column shifter. If you can learn to shift with one of those you can learn to drive about anything. So when I started working as a rent-to-own repo man I did ok driving the large box truck. In fact I only had one accident, I almost ripped the top off of the Yellow Umbrella Restaurant. I think I liked the Yellow Umbrella because it reminded me of L&J’s in Greenwood. I got my burgers, jumped in the truck, started to take off when I hit the overhanging “umbrella”; something the L&J never had.
