Mary Ann Thomson, who resided near Charleston, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in Charleston. She was born July 2, 1933, in Charleston to the late Everett Shorty Buckner and Lettie (Patterson) Buckner Gilsinger. She was almost 84 years old. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam L. Thomson; her step-father, Leo Gilsinger; a sister, Ethel Colvard; and a nephew, Mark Gilsinger.


Mary Ann was a 1951 graduate of Charleston High School and was crowned the 1951 Arkansas Valley Rodeo Queen in Russellville. Mary Ann was a former licensed funeral director at Smith Mortuary in Charleston and achieved a lifetime funeral directors license with the Arkansas State Board of Embalming and Funeral Directing. She was office manager for McConnell Construction Company in Charleston, Charter President of the South Franklin County Democratic Women’s Club, member of the Fort Smith Women in Construction Club, former secretary/treasurer of Morris Cemetery Association, and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston.


Rosary service was at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 23rd, at Brotherton Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston.


Funeral mass was at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 24th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston. Burial was at Hampton Cemetery, located north of Branch, under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home and Flower Shop in Charleston.


She is survived by two sisters, Sue Neissl of Charleston and Betty Holland of Branch; three brothers, Everett Buckner, Don Buckner and wife Betty June, and Nick Gilsinger and wife Linda, all of Charleston; (21) nieces and nephews, (44) great-nieces and nephews, and (43) great-great-nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers were Bryan Buckner, Larry Holland, Marvin Holland, Jr., Ed Colvard, Donnie Colvard, William Buckner, Michael Gilsinger, and Mike Davis.


Family visited with friends following the rosary service.
