The Quiz Bowl team from Greenwood’s East Pointe Elementary took first place at the Western Arkansas Educational Cooperative’s 4th Grade Quiz Bowl Tournament held April 24 at Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church in Van Buren. Fifteen teams from area elementary schools participated in the tournament.
After a first round bye, East Pointe defeated Paris and Van Buren-Central in the preliminary seeding games, and were seeded third on the afternoon bracket. East Pointe then defeated the sixth seed Greenwood’s Westwood 225-135 and triumphed over seventh seed Scranton 255-150, a team that had upset second seed Magazine. In the final East Pointe faced top-seeded Van Buren-Rena. After the regulation match ended in a 265-265 tie, the teams went into a five-question overtime. After the fourth overtime question, the the game was again tied at 275-275, On the fifth and final question, East Pointe player Maddie Mathews buzzed in with the correct answer to give East Pointe the win.
The East Pointe Quiz Bowl team is comprised of 4th graders Allison Rose, who most often served as the team’s captain, Grant Huneycutt, Maddie Mathews, Jonathan Ivey, Evan Bartlett, Leigha Luster, and Miles Chrisman; and third graders Riley Ortiz, Cooper Young, Jabin Huff, Katie Rupert, and Hallie Jones. The team is coached by East Pointe Gifted and Talented Teacher/Coordinator Rick Clow.
