Sebastian County Clerk Sharon Brooks will seek re-election in 2014.
Brooks, 52, a Republican from Fort Smith, was elected in 2010 and is seeking her third term.
"I am thankful to the citizens of Sebastian County for every day that I have served as your county clerk," Brooks stated in a news release. "I have worked diligently to earn and keep your trust in myself as well as my staff. The No. 1 priority of this office is always to serve Sebastian County citizens and provide you with the information that they seek in a professional, courteous and prompt manner. I will continue to work toward offering access to online records as well as other ways to improve the services offered by this office. My staff and I are committed to offer the best customer service and assistance to all who call or come into the office."
In Brooks’ tenure, the county clerk’s office instituted many changes. The office now accepts credit card payments for services both in person and by telephone, and has implemented a digitized map to better assist voters in locating their precincts, a process which will also help greatly in future redistricting efforts. The office now uses spreadsheets instead of ledgers for bookkeeping.
The office is undergoing the first phase of efforts to digitize county records, which Brooks credits as a major goals.
Among short-term goals for her office is incorporating electronic poll books for better service at polling sites, Brooks stated.
During her time in office, Brooks reorganized her staff and implemented new managerial responsibilities for both the Fort Smith and Greenwood offices.
"There is still much to be done in the way of improving services to the public, and I am looking forward to implementing new ideas in 2014 and beyond," Brooks stated.
Brooks is vice president of the Sebastian County Republican Women, a member of the Arkansas Association of County Clerks, Southside Rotary Club, Fidelity Women’s Club and the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers. She is an Area Agency on Aging board member, a member of the Arkansas Circuit Clerks Grants Committee, the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and a member of Focus on Greenwood and City of Fort Smith, Police, Fire and Sheriff Department citizen academies.
Brooks and her husband Carter have four children and two grandchildren. They attend Ninth Street Church of Christ.
The county clerk serves two-year terms, with an annual salary of $81,049.
