The Pine Bluff Zebras faced off against their toughest opponent this season on Friday night. The West Memphis Blue Devils hosted the Zebras entering the game with and undefeated record.
Pine Bluff fought a long, hard battle against the No. 1 team in the 6A East conference but fell just short to the Blue Devils 24-23.
Pine Bluff went 65 yards down the field on their opening drive, which led to a 3-yard touchdown by Braylon Moody, putting the Zebras on the board first 7-0.
West Memphis tied it on the first play of the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown by Latavian Murry and took the lead on their next possession on a 41-yard touchdown run by Devin Olloway to go ahead 14-7 over Pine Bluff.
Just before halftime, Shauwn Howell found Berkarion Black on a screen route, and Black left the defenders behind him for a 74-yard touchdown to tie the game 14-14.
The Blue Devils immediately regained the lead on an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Olloway to open the second half.
Later in the third, West Memphis extended their lead 24-14 with a field goal.
Pine Bluff's final points came on a 4-yard touchdown by Moody with 4:38 left in the third quarter and then on a safety when a high snap to the West Memphis punter was kicked out of his own end zone to cut the Pine Bluff deficit to 24-23.
Unfortunately, the Zebras couldn't score on their final drive of the game, resulting in their fourth straight loss.
