A woman was strangled to death at the beginning of October in Altus, according to Arkansas Crime Laboratory results.

Franklin County Sheriff's deputies on Oct. 6 found Elaine Kelley, 72, of Altus dead inside her residence on Liberty Road. Authorities on Thursday did not list a suspect in the case, which Franklin County officials have turned over to Arkansas State Police, Sheriff Anthony Boen said.

Boen said a patrol deputy on Oct. 6 initially responded to Kelley's residence to conduct a welfare check. He said the door of the residence was partially open when the deputy got there and found Kelley dead inside.

"He notified the paramedics, and he in turn notified the coroner’s office," Boen said. "The coroner’s office and I decided to send Ms. Kelley to the crime lab."

Crime Lab officials on Oct. 9 ruled Kelley's death as homicide by strangulation, Boen said.

Sheriff's officials handed the case over to State Police, Boen said, because they were tied up with the Oct. 8 double homicide near the Etna community and a drive-by shooting in Altus. State Police spokesperson Bill Sadler on Thursday referred the Times Record to County Prosecutor David Gibbons' office for further information, but officials with the prosecutor's office could not be reached for comment.

Boen on Thursday said he could not estimate where State Police are in the investigation.

"We’ll go back to assisting them once we get caught up on the other two incidents," said Boen.
