The Greenwood School Board voted unanimously at their February meeting for a construction project that will add new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units to the H.B. Stewart Basketball Arena.
The basketball gym was originally built without ac as a cost savings measure back in 1996.
“We have been looking at this project for a number of years,” said Greenwood Assistant Superintendent Kevin Hesslen.
Hesslen stated that the current heating units are approaching 20 years old and that it is time that they were replaced.
The school will perform the construction themselves in order to save money. Hesslen stated that the school has taken bids in the past to cool the arena and that some of the bids came in as high at a million dollars.
The district will buy four HVAC units directly from Lennox for $168,023. The new units will produce 40 tons of air. Hesslen estimated that the school may save as much as $300,00 by handling the project themselves. The total cost of the project is estimated to cost $278,088.
