Brother and sister Gabe and Elise Hensley recently competed in the Sebastian County Spelling Bee at the Breedlove Auditorium at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Gabe an eight year old student from Westwood placed second overall in the county bee after winning the spelling bee for Westwood. Elise, who attends East Hills, took third place after winning her school’s spelling bee.

This was Elise’s second trip to the county bee last year she took fourth place in first attempt.

This was Gabe’s first attempt, Westwood kids normally do not compete until the fourth grade but and exception was made for Hensley, who beat students a grade level higher.

The siblings fought it out at the county bee and wound up second and third. The pair each walked away with a plaque and a scholarship. Gabe received $500 and Elise won a $250.

“They worked really hard for this,” said proud mother Norma Hensley. “We went over the words everyday. We were so sick of spelling words. They prepared for months and it really paid off.”
