Greenwood Police Officer, Gene Short, is one of the newest on the department but is far from inexperienced. Short has 17 years of law enforcement experience starting with the Russellville PD, where he worked for two years, 10 years with the Arkansas Highway Police and five years with the Federal Air Marshals Service.

Gene went into the the Army National Guard after high school where he served for three years and 13 years with the Navy.

When Short left active duty military he returned home to Russellville and took a job working at the Pope County jail before transitioning to the police department. Though law enforcement runs in his family Short stated that it was not something that he aspired to. “It was never something that interested me,” said Short. “I wanted to be a Biologist but 17 years later here I am.”

Gene earned a bachelor's and master’s degree in Emergency Management at Arkansas Tech.

Short stated that he is happy to be on the department and to be moving to the area. “The Greenwood Police Department is gem,” said Short. “The leadership here, not just in the department but the citywide leadership in the city council as well as the mayor is just great. If everyone knew about it they would be breaking down the doors to get into this place.”

Gene has been married to his wife, Kay, for 25 years and has two children, Austin, who is 22 and Brooke, who is 19.
