Destination, Argentina, as nearly 80 attendees took an imaginary journey to South America while sampling regional wines and enjoying local fare.
Cork & Bottle, along with Wittman Catering and Craig Annen, Coronado Center manger, created an evening of food and wine sampling, featuring Argentina for the recent soldout event. It was a warm night caressed by light breezes and enjoyed by many gathered on the patio.
Kicking off the tasting began as everyone was greeted by Cork & Bottle staff offering a glass of Domaine Bousquet's brut. This particular wine is sparkling and offers a green apple aroma to the Chardonnay with a light finish. Bill Lamoureux was on hand to describe the pairings.
Wittman Catering served the salmon tapenade appetizer, accompanied by Girl & Dragon Pino Grigio. The white wine was an ideal coupling for the fresh fish.
Next on the menu was a salad composed of Romaine Radicchio, avocado, cucumbers and croutons,  caressed with a mustard red wine vinaigrette. The salad was linked with a Torrontes Chardonnay presenting numerous tropical aromas and a bright flavor.
Wittman's main course of skirt steak al chimichurri, charred corn and creamy polenta was complemented with a dark violet Malbec sharing light scents of blackberry, currant, coffee and black pepper. To the mouth, the Malbec offered hints of raspberry, figs and a slight touch of chocolate.
Cork & Bottle’s sparkling rosé finished the evening joining dessert, pastelitos de dulce de leche (small creamy cakes).
Argentina has produced wine since the mid-16th century. Two of the strongest wine-making regions are Mendoza and San Juan and the most popular grape is the Malbec, a French variety introduced to the country by a French agronomist. The Torrontés grape is native to the country and Argentina is the only country in the world where it is grown.
Next on the schedule for the World Tour of Wines will be Chile, Oct. 19, again at the Coronado Community Center.
