The Newport School District Board of Education held the monthly meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2017. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm.  All board members were present.
    The Board took action on several items. First, the members approved the minutes of the three previous meetings; August 15th, August 21st and September 5th. Second, the board rescinded action on the employment of Matt Hardin. Mr. Hardin declined the position of AgScience Teacher for the 2017-18 school year. Third, the board approved the contract of the School Resource Officer, as well as the employment of Jimmy Smith as a district bus driver. The board also approved the Assurances that the District would comply with all federal and state requirements regarding federal and state funds. Dale Ball was appointed as Fostercare Liaison and Katrina Shumate as Surrogate Parent for Special Education Students. The board also approved the Minority Recruitment Plan.
    The Board took action on the structure and roles of the members. They approved the results of the Annual School Election which provided for the re-election of Kathy Green as a Board Member for the next five years. Second, the board reorganized the Board Officers, Dennis Haigwood elected as Board President, Leroy Mansko as Vice-President and Kathy Green as Secretary, and also appointed Green as Disbursing Officer. Eddie Cooley was appointed as Voting Delegate to the Annual School Board Conference and member Jeff Rutledge will be the Legislative Liaison representing the district in legislative issues.
    The Newport High School campus has undergone a few changes this school year. The fieldhouse has a new lobby with a wonderful greyhound on the outer wall that lights in the evening. Pictured in the floor of the foyer to the new lobby. Second, new sidewalks were installed in front of the Administration building and Tech Science building. Third, the football stadium has a new home concession stand and numerous restrooms for fans. These upgrades are what sets Newport apart from other area schools. The board discussed the construction of three outdoor pavilions for the Newport Elementary School.
    Although a parent requested to speak to the School Board, no action was taken because the parent had not submitted the request and was not placed on the agenda. The board voted to expel a student for violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
    Financial action included adoption of the 2017-18 annual budget. The Board heard various reports from the Superintendent and adjourned the meeting at 9:15 pm.
