Greenwood City Firefighter Martin Young has been on the department for 16 years now. Martin moved to Greenwood from Barling in the spring of 1991. Young stated that some friends of his that were on the department in the year 2000 encouraged him to join. Since that time Martin has become a certified Firefighter II, is an EMT, serves on the search and rescue team, has achieved the rank of Fire Officer I and Instructor II.

Martin was promoted to Lieutenant a year ago and was moved up to Captain after the first of the year.

“I love it,” said Young. “I love Greenwood. I am not from here so it is hard for me to express how blessed I am to be here and to be involved in the things that I have been involved in for the past 25 years.”

In his time in Greenwood Young has served on the planning commission for 20 years and what was then known as the parks committee for six years.

“I have worked for some good mayors,” said Young. “It has just been a joyous 25 years that I have lived here. I used to think that I would return to Barling someday but now there is no way I would leave Greenwood.”

Martin stated that he and his wife have six children together and that their sixth grandchild is on its way.
