Laurie Young’s senior English classes at Greenwood High School have recently been reading, writing, and analyzing poetry.
After reading "Mask" by Shel Silverstein and "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, the students were asked to reflect on how individuals often mask their true selves. Students were asked to consider society’s perception of them compared to their self-perception and write a poem on that subject.
The students’ poems were displayed anonymously for selection by their classmates. The poems which received the most votes, along with a couple of "teacher choice" selections, were chosen for publication.
