The American Cancer Society will hold its annual Relay for life event at the Greenwood High School track this Friday. The Relay for Life for South Sebastian County is the premier event for the American Cancer Society and will be held at Robinson Stadium at Greenwood High School on Friday, May 30, from 7 p.m. to Saturday morning June 1 at 6 a.m. There will again be lots of activities. "We all have been affected by cancer," said Dr. Sandy Johnson a participant in the relay. "So this event provides an opportunity for all of us to come together to celebrate life and raise awareness." Music will be provided again this year by Mark Huneycutt, the event chairman. Johnson Dermatology Clinic will be offering free skin cancer screenings and product samples. Many of the Greenwood schools and businesses are participating. The theme for this year is Celebrate in 2008. For more information, contact Mark Huneycutt by email at mhuneycutt@greenwood.k12.ar.us or by phone at 996-8989.
The Relay for Life will be a family event and parents are encouraged to bring their kids out to enjoy the festivities. There will be everything from motorcycles, to pony rides to bounce arounds to all and plenty of food.
According to the American Cancer Society the relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in the community. The event will be a celebration of survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back. During the event, teams of people gather at the high school track and take turns walking or running laps. Each team will try to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
But, the Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. During this event, survivors will be honored during the Survivors Lap and those lost to cancer will be remembered during the Luminary Ceremony.
Most importantly the Relay gives you the power to help in the fight against cancer. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the American Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family.
